实用英语 实用英语单词

  “实用英语”是一个关于英语学习的电台节目,希望同学们能从节目中学到英式英语的新词汇和新说法。本期学习的新说法是whip-round(凑份子)。现在让我们来听听主持人是如何介绍这个词的用法吧!

Vicki: Hello, this is Real English from Learning English. I’m Vicki.
  Lilly: Hello. I’m Lilly.
Vicki: In Real English, we look at words and phrases you might not find in your dictionary. And today’s word is “whip-round.”
  Lilly: Whip-round.
Vicki: Well if you do a Whip-round, you collect money from a group of people -
everyone puts some money in. For example, you might do a Whip-round to buy a
joint[一起的] present for somebody. Or you could do a Whip-round to pay for something as a group.

  Dialogue Excerpts: (对话摘录)

When I was at university, we wanted to get a kettle[壶] so we could make our own tea in between lectures, so we did a whip-round all the students in my class and bought one easily.

Vicki: If somebody is leaving, or unwell, we do a Whip-round to buy them a present or some flowers. People who don’t
have much money individually[个别地], like students, might do a Whip-round to buy something they couldn’t afford unless they all contribute[贡献]. Well, that’s all we have time for today. Bye!
  Lilly: Bye!
